BREATHE BETTER, SLEEP BETTER: SLEEP APNEA APPLIANCES
Treating sleep apnea can be accomplished through a variety of methods, including a CPAP machine or surgical procedures. But did you know that using a custom fit dental appliance is also a very effective treatment option? If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea– a condition in which relaxation of the muscles around the tongue and throat causes the tissues to block airflow to the lungs while you sleep – a sleep apnea appliance may be what you need.
What to Expect
Mandibular advancement devices, which ease the jaw forward, or tongue retaining devices can be made and worn during the night to open up the airway and allow you to breathe easier. These appliances are created by first taking impressions of your upper and lower teeth. This will then be sent to a lab where the appliance is made. You will return to the office about two weeks later to try the appliance on and have it adjusted, if needed. Instructions are given on how to insert and remove the appliance, keep it clean and when to wear it. The same appliances can prevent snoring.
